Curriculum vitae

of a person known as Richard Brauer

Everybody's life begins with things they can't possibly remember. In my case this was my being born on the morning of Saturday, 3rd September 1977 in the beautiful town of Wuppertal. My parents chose my name to be Richard and added a Tobias which is okay but I must confess I could live without it. After this wholly remarkable date there happened nothing for quite a long time until at the age of five I convinced some people that I really could touch my left ear with my right hand and thus they decided I should be allowed to go to school which of course I did.

After four years on primary school I continued my "academic career" at the Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium in Wuppertal. On September 30th 1994 I moved to somewhere around Darmstadt and therefore spent the last two years at school at the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt.

It is a shame that after school young men still have to convince some jerks that they are indeed really nice guys who could never kill other people and so on to be able to do community instead of military service. I worked at a childrens' hospital in Darmstadt for a year and I had quite a lot of fun there.

In 1997 I started studying physics at the RWTH (University of Technology) in Aachen and did my first big exams (we call them "Vordiplom" and I'm not gonna think of an appropriate translation now) in the summer of 1999. After this I went to Edinburgh where I studied and marvelled at the beauty of the northwestern Highlands for about a year. After returning to Aachen, I passed my Diplom (more or less Master of Science) in 2004.

Since May 2004 I'm working as a phD student at the 1. Physikalisches Institut B of the RWTH, where I am a member of the CMS tracker group. See my CERN home page for more details.
